With the Quest for ROSE hackathon off to a fantastic start, we wanted to share a bit more about the judges that will be reviewing projects and picking winners for each challenge. We’ve hand picked privacy thought leaders, blockchain experts, and start up veterans from the Oasis Community. Their expertise will help them assess each project and pick the winners of the Quest for ROSE.

Judges Spotlight

Here are just a few of the judges that will be on the panel, visit our hackathon page to learn more about the competition and our sponsors.

Kamal Obbad is the Chief Executive Officer of Nebula Genomics. Previously, he was a product manager at Google working within Google Research and ChromeOS. Kamal was a Gates-Cambridge Scholar at the University of Cambridge and is a graduate of Harvard University.

Andrew Howell, Lead Blockchain Engineer at Blockdaemon, designs and implements scalable solutions to deploy & manage high performance nodes for public blockchain networks. Andrew focuses on automating, configuring, monitoring & maintaining multiple different blockchain software solutions in a multi-cloud environment. Prior to joining Blockdaemon, Andrew worked as a lead engineer on the innovation team at OpenJaw Technologies, where he built AI driven chatbots for the travel industry. He holds a BSc in Software Development from Limerick Institute of Technology and is currently studying a MSc in Distributed Ledger Technology at Dublin City University.

Andrew is a 4x entrepreneur and engineer that has started, sold, and wound down startups. In addition to running the gamut of startup outcomes, Andrew has experience in software engineering, marketing, and sales and is now focused on product at Figment.

Hung-Ying Tai is the VP of Engineering at Second State. He is a pioneer in compiler optimization and virtual machine design. He is a prolific open source contributor, participating in many blockchain open-source projects including go-ethereum, solidity, MyEtherWallet, SOLL and SSVM. Hung-Ying is also an active speaker and teacher. He is designing and teaching Solidity online tutorials in Taiwanese Mandarin.

Viktor is a protocol specialist at Bison Trails, where he leads research, adoption, and collaboration with the 30+ protocols on Bison Trails. Prior to joining, Viktor did product strategy and token design at ConsenSys, and co-founded the blockchain research company Parea in 2017. Before that he advised financial institutions on digital strategy and UX design at EY.

Brian Crain is CEO and Co-Founder of Chorus One, which helps secure and govern decentralized networks. Chorus One is one of the leading staking providers on Oasis, Cosmos, Solana, and more than 10 other networks. He is also Co-Founder and Co-Host of the blockchain podcast Epicenter, which has reached 5 million downloads in almost 300 episodes. Previously, he was COO at Tendermint. Brian graduated with degrees in economics, philosophy and cognitive science from the University of Chicago, London School of Economics and University College London.

Avichal Garg is Partner and Co-Founder of Electric Capital. He has started and sold two startups and has prior executive experience at Facebook and Google. Avichal is an investor in companies and protocols such as Anchorage, Bitwise, Celo, Coda, Dapper Labs/Cryptokittes, dYdX, Lightning Labs and many technology companies outside of crypto such as Color Genomics, Cruise, Boom Supersonic, Newfront Insurance, Airtable, Figma, and Notion.

Neil Daswani is Co-Director of the Stanford Advanced Security Certification Program, and has also served as an Executive-in Residence at Trinity Ventures. He has in the past served in a variety of research, development, teaching, and executive roles at Symantec, LifeLock, Twitter, Dasient, Google, NTT DoCoMo USA Labs, Yodlee, and Bellcore. Neil has been both a security entrepreneur having co-founded Dasient which was acquired by Twitter, and has also served as a Chief Information Security Officer at LifeLock and at Symantec’s Consumer Business Unit. His DNA is deeply rooted in security research and development, he has dozens of technical articles published in top academic and industry conferences (ACM, IEEE, USENIX, RSA, BlackHat, and OWASP), and he has been granted over a dozen U.S. patents. Neil is also co-author of “Foundations of Security: What Every Programmer Needs To Know” (, He earned Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Computer Science at Stanford University, and he holds a B.S. in Computer Science with honors with distinction from Columbia University.

David Wu is currently the Chief Development Officer at Netskope, a world-wide leader in security clouds. Mr. Wu is an industry veteran with over 25 years of experience in leading research and development teams. Prior to Netskope, Mr. Wu was the Chief Technology Officer and part of the founding team at Riverbed Technology, where he led the team from inception to over $1B in revenue and a successful IPO in 2006. Mr. Wu has held senior engineering positions at netVmg, Inktomi, and FastForward Networks. Mr. Wu holds a B.A. and M.S. in Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley and has been awarded over 20 patents.
