Oasis Architecture

Our network has two main architectural components, the consensus layer and the ParaTime layer. The consensus layer is a scalable, high-throughput, secure, proof-of-stake consensus run by a decentralized set of validator nodes. The ParaTime Layer, also known as Compute Layer, hosts many parallel runtimes (ParaTimes), each representing a replicated compute environment with shared state. The separation of the consensus layer and the ParaTime layer enables scalability (multiple ParaTimes to process transactions in parallel) and versatility (anyone can develop and build their own ParaTime).


The Oasis's layered, modular architecture provides scalability, customizability, and flexibility. Developers can build first-class, privacy-enabled dApps with ease and at low cost.


Oasis Sapphire and the Oasis Privacy Layer are confidential ParaTimes, enabling developers to easily utilize confidentiality in their dApps, priming blockchain privacy for mass adoption.


The Oasis ParaTime layer supports a wide spectrum of compute environments, allowing the Oasis network to seamlessly support new use cases as the blockchain industry evolves.

Oasis Sapphire — the first and only confidential EVM in production — provides developers with the ability to build EVM-based dApps with on-chain Smart Privacy.

Smart Privacy enables developers and users to harness privacy at any point of the spectrum: 100% private, 100% public, or anywhere in between.

Oasis Privacy Layer

What is the Oasis Privacy Layer?

The Oasis Privacy Layer (OPL) is the bridge to and from Oasis Sapphire that makes its Smart Privacy features cross-chain, allowing any dApp on any EVM chain to harness Smart Privacy while preserving the entire UX on the home chain.

By integrating OPL, an existing dApp’s contracts, users, and assets can stay on the host network. Elements of the dApp that require privacy can be deployed on Oasis Sapphire. The host network can securely pass messages to and from Oasis Sapphire by using OPL’s messaging bridge.

Every blockchain has its own native gas token, which can create cross-chain friction. But by using OPL, dApps can pay gas with their own native token while still leveraging the confidentiality features of the Sapphire runtime. Messages are passed through and executed on Sapphire. Users can directly interact with confidential contracts. And gas is paid for in whatever token fuels their native network.

Pontus-X, developed by DeltaDAO, is a development environment tailored for quick onboarding and confidential EVM features that support private transactions, TEEs for Smart Privacy, and more.

Oasis Cipher

Cipher, a WebAssembly (WASM)-based privacy-enabled ParaTime, is a research environment on Rust that developers can use to create confidential dApps with the Oasis Contract SDK.

Oasis Emerald

Emerald was our first implementation of an EVM-compatible ParaTime with an interoperability focus that we later evolved with the deployment of Oasis Sapphire, which combines EVM-compatibility and confidentiality.

With the successful deployment of Oasis Safe by ProtoFire on Sapphire and a partnership with Transak, Oasis users also have access to industry-leading custody options, staking, and easy on-ramps for the Oasis ecosystem.

Oasis Nexus

Oasis Nexus is the official indexer tool for the Oasis Network and the backend for explorers and wallets. Nexus continuously fetches blockchain data from one or more Oasis nodes, parses the data and stores it into a heavily indexed SQL database, which provides a JSON-based web API to access the data.

Oasis command-line interface (CLI) is a powerful all-in-one tool for interacting with the Oasis network (token management, automation, network governance, monitoring, & more).
