Oasis Bloom Hackathon Winners — Interview with Legions of Oasis

We talk to Hasan from Legions of Oasis, for a behind-the-scenes look at the Oasis Bloom Hackathon GameFi Master Award-winning team.

What is your project about? Please describe your project in your own words (in friendly, accessible terms)
Legions of Oasis is a play-to-earn roguelike game that is both sustainable and fun to play. It aims to fix the problems that most play-to-earn games face by building the game around its own decentralized exchange.

Web3 is about innovating, disrupting, and evolving industries — What industry is your project aiming to evolve, and what are the specific issues you want to solve?
We are aiming to evolve the gaming industry by introducing a sustainable play-to-earn mechanic to the game. Play-to-earn games are not new; many other projects have already done this, e.g., Axie Infinity, Defi Kingdoms, etc. However, they have all struggled to sustain their game economy because their model is based on constantly finding new players to play the game and keep their economy going.

In Legions of Oasis, the play-to-earn model revolves around its own decentralized exchange where playable characters represent shares of liquidity pools. This way, the game economy does not depend on finding new players to play the game. Instead, it is more about people trading on the exchange and collecting trading fees, which is one of the main pillars that keep the DeFi world going.

Where does your project name come from? Where did you get the inspiration?
We wanted to build a world where different liquidity pairs represented individual factions or kingdoms on the Oasis Network, with factions fighting each other to gain the most liquidity. Thus, we came up with the name Legions of Oasis.

What does your typical day look like?
I wake up and get ready for my day job, and at the end of the day, I crack open my laptop and start coding. Sometimes, I would learn new stuff, and other times I would start building a small project. Coding keeps me going and it’s been that way for the past couple of years.

Why did you decide to build on Oasis Network? Is there anything that excites you specifically about the Oasis community and team?
I decided to build on the Oasis Network mainly because I was intrigued by its technology, where the consensus layer and the execution layer are separated using ParaTimes. I believe that this is the best way to scale a blockchain. I also believe that Dawn Song, the founder of Oasis, is a very talented and smart person and that she will lead the network to success.

Who is on your team? Tell us a few things about you, your roles, and your passions. How did you meet each other and decide to work together?
I initially worked on this project alone, but as I sought to launch this on mainnet soon, I reached out to some of my friends to help with some community management and marketing work. I worked with them previously on an OlympusDAO fork, and so far, they have been delightful.

What excites you most about blockchain & Web3? Are there any “crazy dreams” you have for the industry, and how it will affect our broader society?
I think the main thing that excites me the most about blockchain & Web3 is trustlessness. The ability to create an application that requires no trust is nothing short of amazing. On top of that, it truly enables users to own their data. My crazy dream is that we live in a world where we no longer need to place our trust in any middleman. I think that this will enable society to own their actions and control their circumstances better.

What are your future goals; where do you see yourself in 2–3 years from now? What’s next for you?
One of my main future goals is to bring and normalize crypto into the game development world. In the future, I can see myself continuing to build and learning exciting ways to integrate crypto into gaming healthily and sustainably.

What are some obstacles you faced while building your project? What did you learn?
One of the obstacles I faced while building Legions of Oasis was trying to construct a model where both DeFi and GameFi interacted with each other in a way that benefits both sides of the model. I learned that these two aspects really work well together when done correctly.

Who is your Web3 hero? Who do you admire in this space?
None other than Dawn Song. I think the work that she has done in this space is phenomenal and truly deserves recognition.

What is your motto?
Keep on learning!

What do you like to do outside work?
Play indie games! Mostly roguelikes and retro-FPS’s
